Like many states in the U.S, North Dakota grapples with the issue of suicide awareness and prevention, which affects people from all walks of life irrespective of their age, gender, race and financial circumstance. FirstLink has been dedicated to providing suicide services that range from Suicide Survivor’s Support Group to 24 hour Suicide Lifeline that provides information, referral and support to those in crisis.
Since 2000, FirstLink has held an annual walk for suicide awareness and prevention called Walk of Hope. The walk helps bring awareness to the issue of suicide and helps suicide survivors meet other survivors face to face. The common feelings of shame, guilt, and being alone that many survivors experience are confronted at the walk. Participants can see that they are not alone. This year will be our 12th Annual Walk and will begin and end at the Fargo Public Library Courtyard. Participants will walk to the Angel of Hope in Island Park and place flowers with their loved one’s name at the statue and follow with a moment of silence. We then will proceed back to the library for a short program that includes a featured speaker, music, and time for open mic for those that choose to share their story.
We hope all of you join us at the walk to help promote suicide prevention and awareness this year!
Date and Time – September 9th 2012. Registration starts at 1:30 pm. The walk begins at 2:00 pm.
