Triumphant Triathlon

“Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.”

October 2013, Leola experienced a tragic loss that I hope no one has to ever go through.  Leola’s brother-in-law Scott took his life leaving behind his wife and daughters.  Leola always enjoys remembering the quote at the heading of this piece, because it “Hung in Scott’s office and when he was feeling well, it was his motivation for life.”  Through the strength of her sister and nieces Leola has learned the ability to choose passion over grief, understanding over anger, and courage over discouragement.

“I wish there was something I could have said to Scott to give him support since he did so much for me during his life.  I realize that his death was the result of mental illness that he didn’t want anybody to know he struggled with.”  Leola has so much strength and passion inside her that she is now going to participate in the Ironman Triathlon greatly in Scott’s memory, but to also raise awareness about mental health.

“The quote at the heading to this piece hung in Scott’s office and when he was feeling well, it was his motivation for life.”

This triathlon will express the memory of Scott and the love shown by his wife and daughters towards Leola.  “I am doing the Ironman Triathlon in Boulder, Colorado on August 3rd of this year.  I’ll be wearing purple on race day- Scott’s lucky color- and I’m positive it will help get me to the finish!  The race consists of swimming 2.4 miles, biking 112 miles and running a marathon (26.2 miles!).  I plan to leave a trail!”

“I’ll be wearing purple on race day- Scott’s lucky color- and I’m positive it will help get me to the finish!”

“Everyone thinks long endurance races are an individual sport, they are, but in so many ways it is a team sport, no race is ever completed alone. Faith family and friends get you through it!”  FirstLink in Fargo, ND and The Center for Grief, Loss and Transition in St. Paul, MN has agreed to be part of Leola’s partners in training.  Partnering with these two organizations Leola hopes to raise more awareness about mental health and express gratitude for the support Scott’s family has received as survivors.  Leola is putting her faith and hope in YOU to JOIN her team!
